A Moray family has seen their internet speeds boost improve from 20Mbps to 150Mbps thanks due to the R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS).

The family live in Muirton, which is a small rural development of around twenty houses a mile from the coastal town of Lossiemouth. They secured a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection through a local broadband supplier, WiFi Scotland, who applied to the Scottish Government’s flagship broadband programme, Reaching 100% (R100), on their behalf.

They said: “Our improved speeds have made a huge difference to both work and leisure for me and my family. Beforehand, the connection would cause issues at times when I was working from home, especially during Microsoft Teams calls.

“The improved speeds have increased my productivity when working from home by providing improved functionality when using Teams and other online work platforms.

“We used to have issues with refreshing when streaming films and TV shows. Previously, our 4G mobile connection had download speeds of 20Mbps. Now we get around 150Mbps, which is brilliant. Slow internet speeds used to restrict our ability to make video calls and stream films and TV shows, but with our R100 SBVS connection, we can now do this.”

Multiple devices connected

“For my family the improved connectivity has also made life much better. It allows the family to access numerous multimedia devices simultaneously. We have an electric car and like to connect to multiple devices at once within the house, the improved broadband provides a much better connection to our smart devices than before.

“One of my daughters can watch streaming services, while the other is video calling her friends, and I can still be on a Teams call. Prior to the improved connection, this would have been almost impossible.

“Access to faster broadband is an absolute necessity to provide equality of working opportunities and allow access to modern communication and leisure activities. I can work from home more frequently and more effectively than I could before.”

The R100 programme is enabling access to faster broadband via three strands of activity – the R100 contracts, commercial coverage and the R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme.

The R100 SBVS is available to properties who are experiencing speeds lower than 30Mbps and are not in the current build plans for R100 contracts or commercial coverage. The voucher scheme is open to eligible homes and businesses.
