Winning in Kilwinning with new 4G broadband

Wednesday, 18 January 2023

Access to fast, reliable broadband is essential to our everyday lives and makes it possible to manage healthcare services at home.

A retired resident from Kilwinning, North Ayrshire can now access faster broadband through a 4G mobile connection as a result of applying for the Scottish Government’s Reaching 100% (R100) Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS).

Although the resident lives in the last house in their town and is the furthest away from the nearest broadband exchange point they can now freely browse the internet.

Home entertainment

They said: “When I first moved to my current property, it soon became clear that my download and upload speeds were terrible. It used to take five days to download a film in SD (standard definition). My broadband speeds were so slow that I noticed it was quicker to use 4G on my phone.

“After having my new 4G broadband installed via a small dish on the roof it was like night and day. Now my download and upload speeds are around 40Mbps.

“Without R100 SBVS, I would have little to no internet access at all. I now freely browse the internet, download TV programmes and films which I can watch instantly while using multiple wireless devices throughout my home. I can now use online streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.”

Access to health services

“More importantly, I can now access the internet to book hospital appointments and order repeat prescriptions online as I rely on medication on a daily basis.

“I would recommend the R100 SBVS as it gives you the same services and freedom as other fibre broadband providers.”

The R100 programme is enabling access to faster broadband via three strands of activity – the R100 contracts, commercial coverage and the R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme.

The R100 SBVS is available to properties who are experiencing speeds lower than 30Mbps and are not in the current build plans for R100 contracts or commercial coverage. The voucher scheme is open to eligible homes and businesses.
